As you guys know, I’ve been doing quite a bit of traveling these days but my favourite spots are still those close to home. Staycations are so much more stress-free and enjoyable for me and I much rather pack up my little Fiat 500 for a getaway for a weekend rather than board a plane. So with that, let’s jump right in and talk about the art of packing for a staycation, what you need to bring with you and what you need to leave behind.
PACKING FOR A STAYCATION 101
I always think this is funny, but you need to prep for your staycation as you would if you were traveling far away. I always like to hit Hudson’s Bay with a checklist of what I need. At the top of my list are travel-sized toiletries, bronzer, new sunglasses, and a new pair of black jeans - because you can never have too many. Topshop has excellent, quality pieces that are inexpensive and on trend if you’re looking for something specific. I hit them up before I went to LA and again recently since I’m about to do another staycation nearby.
With the weather being totally unpredictable as we head into spring, I like to pack versatile pieces that can pretty much handle any scenario. Jeans are my absolute go-to’s and when I travel, I always pack a pair of skinny black jeans with me. They’re the perfect piece that can take your wardrobe from day-to-night easily. Right now, my faves are the Jamie jeans from Topshop. They’re high-waisted and have distressed detailing on the knees that I love. Trust, you can never have too many black jeans, but when I pack for a getaway, I try to limit myself to only bring one pair. A chambray top is another example of a good versatile piece. I’m loving this one (also from Topshop) because it’s fitted and looks very feminine. The light wash is perfect for going into spring and pairs perfectly with black skinnies or a denim A-line skirt when the weather gets warmer. You can dress it up with some major bling for an evening look and layer on a bad ass leather jacket if you’re like me.
Accessories are much smaller than clothing and can really change up the look of a basic outfit. I love sunglasses more than anything, and these aviators from Michael Kors make me feel like a rock star, even when I’m dressed casually. Necklaces, rings, bracelets are all really easy to pack. I like to keep mine in a cute pouch so they don’t get lost in my carry on. Finally, as much as I love handbags and shoes, I try to limit myself to only brining one bag when I travel and 2-3 pairs of shoes - something casual and comfortable for walking, something dressy for the evening (like a pair of black pumps) and finally a running shoe, because even when I’m not going to bootcamp, I like to work out at the hotel.
THE MAKEUP BAG
This one is hard for me because as a fashion blogger, my makeup bag is as important to me as the clothing I pack. Generally I like to buy travel-sized everything and keep it in a separate travel bag so I can just up and go. Think travel-sized face wash, moisturizers and body lotion. For my makeup, I like keeping a palette aside for travel that has everything I need - blush, highlight, bronzer and eyeshadows. It makes my life so much easier this way! As for makeup, I like foundation sticks that have buildable coverage and won’t spill when I travel. Bonus, they’re also pretty compact.
WHERE TO GO
Downtown Toronto has so many beautiful hotels and destinations that it can feel like you’ve traveled far, even though you haven’t. The Four Seasons Yorkville is incredible and close to so many good shopping sites. If you want to venture out of the city, I would highly recommend Niagara-On-The-Lake and any properties which are under the Vintage Hotel umbrella. Geoff and I have a personal favourite, the Pillar and Post, where we got married years ago. It’s quaint, scenic and feels like a home away from home. If you have pets, just let them know and they can hook you up with one of their pet-friendly rooms.
This post was brought to you by Hudson’s Bay but the images and opinions are my own.
